Jason Allen is senior vice president of on-site generation, technical services and renewables operations for Duke Energy’s Commercial Businesses organization. In this role, he has oversight of the on-site generation business, as well as the engineering and technical services groups for Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS). In addition, he is responsible for the operations of Duke Energy’s renewable energy business.


DEGS is a leader in developing innovative renewable energy solutions, including wind, solar and biopower projects. DEGS also builds, owns and operates electric generation and other utility services for large energy consumers, municipalities, utilities and industrial facilities throughout the U.S.


Prior to taking on his current position in December 2010, Allen served as vice president of operations for Duke Energy Generation Services. He supported the growth of Duke Energy’s renewable energy portfolio and worked to develop the company’s wind operation program.


Allen has held a variety of leadership roles with increasing responsibility. His 20-year career, spanning Cincinnati Gas & Electric, Cinergy Corp., Cinergy Solutions and Duke Energy, includes experience in the areas of power plant operations and maintenance, engineering, gas cogeneration, wholesale power scheduling, IT operations, forecasting and budgeting, and contract negotiations.


He joined Cincinnati Gas & Electric in 1990 as an electrical engineering co-op at the Zimmer Generating Station in Ohio. He has served as production team group leader at the Beckjord and East Bend generating stations, plant manager of the South Houston Green Power facility for Cinergy Solutions, and as a region general manager for the wind energy business at DEGS.


Allen has served as a member of the board of directors and chairman of the Building Committee for the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, the chamber also named him Director of the Year.


The Lima, Ohio, native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a master’s degree from Northwestern University.


Allen and his wife, Julia, have two sons and a daughter.

Mr. Perez joined WCV in February 2010 and is based in the Chicago office. He is responsible for managing power plant operations with a focus on the technical aspects of operations and maintenance. The position is directly responsible for power plant operation performance and setting out strategies surrounding the ongoing operations and maintenance of WCV’s fleet. Mr. Perez has 20 years of experience in the operations and maintenance of electric generating plants for both independent power companies and investor-owned utilities including Invenergy, PP&L and Constellation. Prior to joining Wind Capital, he held the position of Director of O&M at Invenergy LLC, managing over 4,200MW’s in renewable and fossil fuel.


Mr. Perez holds his MBA from Purdue University, earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management from Calumet College of St. Joseph. Mr. Perez’s wind experience includes managing 13 wind farms encompassing over 2,200MW’s as Director of O&M at Invenergy, LLC. Four wind farms operated under five year O&M contract services through OEM providers. The remaining wind farms were managed through Invenergy Services, LLC in which Mr. Perez was responsible for fleet O&M

Tim Hertel is the Director of Technology at EDP Renewables, one of the world’s top wind energy owner-operators. In this role he is responsible for market outlook on new turbine models, research and development of early stage technologies, and improving production from existing fleet assets. Prior to joining EDPR, Tim served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy nuclear program after graduation from the US Naval Academy with a degree Computer Science and recently completed his MBA at Rice University.

Darren McCrank is the Director of Operations for Wind at TransAlta in Calgary, Alberta. TransAlta is Canada’s largest publicly traded generator and marketer of electricity and renewable power. Darren joined TransAlta in November 2010 as the Manager of Wind Plant Engineering, and took on the role of Director in November of 2011. Prior to joining TransAlta, Darren worked at the Alberta Electric System Operator as a Program Manager and Systems Engineer on wind power integration and market design. Darren graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a degree in Electrical Engineering and served with the Canadian Forces as an Army Engineer.

Ross Newlin joined enXco in 2004 as Business Development Director for Operations & Maintenance. In November of 2010 he was appointed as the Director of the Center for Technical Excellence. The Center for Technical Excellence (CTE) is a service solution that offers integrated, centralized, proactive engineering support to the owners and operators of renewable energy plants.

Ross has been in the power generation business since 1987, beginning his career in the gas turbine combined cycle sector with Destec Energy where he performed detailed design and engineering activities, and later progressed to the Project Engineer and Asset Manager role for several large multinational CCGT installations. In 1998 Ross went to work with Enron International in the operations and maintenance group and remained with the company thru 2004 when he left to join enXco.

Ross holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and a Masters of Business Administration from Houston Baptist University.

Mr. Wiener is a graduate of Tulane University where he received his Mechanical Engineer degree. He has worked at GE for over 30 years in several divisions. He started his GE career as a field engineer working on steam and gas turbines in the central US. In 1984 he moved to GE Aircraft Engines in Massachusetts where he rose through the ranks from Test Engineer to Manager of the Military Development Test Facility. In 1993, Mr. Wiener moved to Schenectady NY where he became the Manager of the Combustion Labs that developed the low NOx combustion systems for GE‘s fleet of industrial gas turbines. In 1997 he moved to GE Industrial Systems as a Commercial Director, responsible for a team focused on drives, controls and automation projects for the paper, metals, mining and energy segments. In 2000 Mr. Wiener returned to Power Systems as the global Sales and Commercial Director for the GE Hydro. He joined GE Wind, in 2004. He is currently the Global Sales Director for GE’s rapidly growing Wind Services Business. Located in Schenectady NY, at GE’s Renewable Energy HQ, he leads a team of Account Managers and Proposal Engineers to help find creative win-win solutions for customers.

Scott Shapiro is the Wind Services CM&U Product Line Leader, responsible for the development and lifecycle management of products for the global installed Wind customer base. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University, Syracuse NY and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Union College, Schenectady NY. Scott has over 10 years of experience in renewable energy technologies, joining GE Wind in 2007 as a Top Issue Program Manager. In this role, Scott was responsible for the implementation of systematic improvements and field retrofits across all wind turbine platforms. Scott joined the Wind Services Platform Team in early 2011, assuming overall responsibility and business leadership for setting product strategies for the fleet of installed GE Wind turbines at the global level. After a decade in industrial and consumer product manufacturing, Tom Marek joined the power generation industry with DTE Energy’s Detroit Edison Fossil Generation group. His primary role was operations and maintenance continuous improvement and focused on scheduled maintenance processes, outage planning, asset operation improvement and work force productivity. A variety of projects across DTE’s 14,000 MW fleet over 5 years of were credited with over $81M in cost savings, avoided costs and unbudgeted generation revenue improvements. Mr Marek left the fossil fueled world to join Vestas Americas in 2008 as Director of Continuous Improvement Management. With Vestas, Tom assembled a group of 130 plus to address customer needs beyond regular maintenance and platform upgrades for the Vestas North America fleet. Mr Marek currently is the Business Unit Manager in North America for David Brown Gear Systems’ Windserve global service product line. David Brown is implementing the Windserve aftermarket service product already successful in the UK and Northern Europe for North American wind turbine OEM’s, insurers, operators and owners.

He assisted in the development and instruction of the Spider Competent Person Training Program, presents regularly for industrial and commercial trade associations and consults on specialized rigging and safety applications.

Jon joined NREL in 2011 to manage for the NWTC Gearbox Reliability Collaborative, a consortium of government, industry, and university partners who are addressing reliability issues in wind turbine drive trains through focused testing, analysis, and modeling. Prior to joining NREL, Jon worked for the U.S. Army for 10 years at the Aviation Engineering Directorate in Redstone Arsenal, AL , developing condition monitoring systems and capabilities to reduce the cost and maintenance burdens, while increasing availability and safety, for the Apache, Blackhawk, Chinook, and Kiowa Warrior helicopters. His Ph.D. thesis at Penn State focused on the prediction of transient aeroelastic blade deflections and loads for rotorcraft during startup and shutdown operations on board naval ships.

With over 20 years’ experience in insurance and engineering roles, Chris Cioni, GCube Senior Vice President of Technical Services and Claims is responsible for evaluating emerging technical risk, identifying services to mitigate loss, and managing the claims operation. Previously, Mr. Cioni spent 9 years as the Utility Operations Manager for the University of California, Davis campus, responsible for 115 kV/12 kV high voltage distribution, landfill gas and gas turbine power generation, emergency power systems, steam generation and distribution, district cooling, SCADA systems, and electricity and natural gas procurement.


Prior to joining UC Davis, Mr. Cioni spent 10 years with Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance as their Underwriting Director for western region Power Generation accounts, representing the largest investor owned utilities in the west, as well as many municipal and merchant power generation insureds.


Mr. Cioni began his career at sea as a marine engineer for Reynolds Aluminum, after graduating with an engineering degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Mr. Cioni received an MBA from the University of California, Davis, a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from CSU Sacramento, and registration as a Professional Engineer (Mechanical) in California.

Justin Voss joined Global Risk Consultants (GRC) in 2007 and currently holds the position of Managing Consultant – Power Generation. Mr. Voss has over 18 years’ experience evaluating Highly Protected Risks (HPR) in the Power Generation Industry and has held positions at engineering based insurance companies such as The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company and FM Global.

GRC is an independent, full-service risk control/property loss prevention company that provides “unbundled” risk control programs as an alternative to the traditional bundled insurance type of programs. As a Managing Consultant, Mr. Voss is responsible for the development and implementation of GRC’s industry accepted loss control practices for the Power Generation Industry which includes the rapidly growing area of renewable energy.

Gary Kanaby has worked with composites since 1974 when his yacht-building career began. His business provided Litton Aerospace with thermo chambers as well as producing other custom fiberglass parts. He built custom megayachts in California and Florida before returning to Knight & Carver to lead the Wind Blade operations in 2002. Gary has worked with NREL and Sandia Laboratories to lead a research and development project designing and testing a new wind blade to produce energy in low-wind regions. This project won the U.S. Department of Energy's "Outstanding Research and Development Partnership award in 2005. He developed Knight and Carver's service group into the leader in wind blade repairs in the US. Currently Gary is Director of Sales/Wind Energy at MFG and WES, MFG's service co. Gary has sailed around the world aboard yachts, including one trip that lasted 12 years. He is a 1973 graduate of Wayne State University.

Mr. Kramak’s previous experience at General Electric and Intertek has given him a global view of the renewable energy business and the inherent financial and technical risks associated with the equipment used in renewable energy power production.
